Hot Cocktails To Keep Warm This Winter

As the temperature drops we are tempted to warm our belly with drinks that make us feel toasty. Here are some hot cocktail recipes that are perfect for chilly winter nights.

Tip: You can keep your hot cocktails warm for a longer period by preheating the glassware. Either pour hot water into the glass or warm a glass filled with water in a microwave for 30 seconds.

Hot toddy is a classic hot drink very simple to make and requires a base liquor, honey and lemon. You can choose brandy, dark rum or whisky as the base liquor based on your personal preference. To make this drink heat 3/4 cup of water in a kettle or microwave and pour it into a mug. Add 45 ml of whisky, 2 teaspoons of honey and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Stir until the honey has completely dissolved. Taste and adjust the honey or lemon until it suits your taste buds. Garnish with lemon and a cinnamon stick.

You can twist the recipe by using brandy or dark rum. For robust flavors you can steep a green or black tea bag in the hot water or spice up the drink using fresh peeled ginger, cloves  or star anise.

Mulled Wine:

Mulled wine is incredibly easy to make on a stove top. Add a bottle of red wine, 1 sliced and seeded orange, 8 cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 star anise, 2-4 tablespoons of honey in a sauce pan and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat (make sure you don't boil the wine). Adjust the heat to medium-low and let the wine simmer for  around 15-20 minutes to let the flavors infuse the wine.

Spiked Hot Cocoa:

On a chilly winter night, a creamy mug of hot cocoa can become a wonderful base for a simple cocktail. In a saucepan warm 250 ml of milk and a cinnamon stick. Once the mixture is heated, remove the cinnamon stick and add 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of sugar and whisk until smooth. Remove the saucepan from the stove and add 60 ml spiced or dark rum. Transfer to a mug and for garnish you can use marsh mellows.

Eggnog is quite a favorite during winters with rum or brandy as an excellent base. This brandy eggnog recipe is very easy and requires only 4 ingredients and a cocktail shaker. Combine 30ml of brandy, 40 ml of milk, 15 ml of simple syrup and 1 egg yolk in a cocktail shaker. First dry shake the ingredients without ice and then fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 30-40 seconds to ensure the egg is well mixed. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon.
