Jana Small Finance Bank Celebrates Fourth Jana Diwas 2019 By Honoring Customers & Drawing Attention to Financial Inclusion in India

Millions of customers have been served through programs like savings and deposit accounts, loan programs & financial education till date.  Moreover, 3.5 million customers have benefited due to such outreach programs.  Jana Diwas is observed every year to recognize and celebrate inspiring stories of such individuals and their families. Jana Small Finance Bank connects nationally with its customers and seeks notable success stories. A careful and diligent process, helmed by an eminent jury, helps identify select customers who have made considerable progress in achieving financial independence & transforming their lives.

Mr. Ajay Kanwal, MD & CEO, Jana Small Finance Bank, on occasion of Jana Diwas 2019, presented the opening note. During his speech, he reiterated Jana bank’s efforts towards upliftment of the society. His speech highlighted the fact that since the bank’s inception, it has assisted and enabled millions of customers as well as employees to achieve financial stability. In addition, he spoke about how financial literacy must go beyond opening an account, and lead to prosperity and jobs. Furthermore, he said "What we need to do is enable small businesses and ensure credit is available to them. The real crux of Financial Inclusion is to make sure that this credit is utilized well." 

The event was graced by the presence of Chief Guest Shri Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser, Government of India, who shared his anecdotes on financial inclusion with the audience. “I am honored to be a part of the fourth Jana Diwas which is organized to celebrate the successful relationship of Jana Bank with its customers and employees. Financial inclusion is something I am passionate about and I believe it will play a crucial role in achieving the 5 trillion-dollar economy goal. I wish Jana Bank great success so that they keep education customers about financial literacy for millennials to come”, he said.

The fireside chat & panel discussion on Financial inclusion - Connecting “High Street To Last Mile” was moderated by Mr. Nikunj Dalmia, Managing Editor - ET Now. The panel spoke about how we need more banks to cater to the country’s credit needs. In addition, the role of sunrise sectors in Financial Inclusion was concluded as crucial during the chat. “Emphasis should be placed on the use of technology” said Krishnamurthy Subramanian during the discussion.  

Next, the most inspirational customer stories, highlighting the entrepreneurship and enterprise of its women customers were presented on the dais. Though, Jana Bank had received numerous customer stories from across the nation, a panel of jury members helped the final selection. The panel of jury members included notable names like Dr. D. Subbarao, former Governor, RBI; Mr. Vinod Rai, former Comptroller & Auditor General of India; Mr. Anand Sinha, former Deputy Governor RBI; Mr. Tamal Bandyopadhyay, Sr. Advisor, Jana Small Finance Bank and Dr. Nandakumar Jairam, Chairman, CEO & GMD, Columbia Asia Hospital.

The inspiring success story of one such customer Sonali Jana, was received amidst warm applause. Being the first female rickshaw driver in Behrampur, West Bengal, she highlighted her initial struggles of a troubled marriage. But armed with her infallible determination, support from loved ones & Jana Bank, she took up the challenge and became a rickshaw driver for earning livelihood. Furthermore, she has now secured her son’s future by opening fixed deposits in Jana Small Finance Bank. 

The ceremony ended with employee felicitation, as the work force is an integral part of every success story. Vivek Chauhan from Jaipur, Ashish Prasad from Bihar & Rajendra were honored for their exceptional service, despite facing hardships in their personal lives.
