Review: Olive Bar and Kitchen, a lounge bar serving Mediterranean world cuisine.

What you see- White pebbled courtyard and white walls lit by candles invite you at Olive Bar and Kitchen located at Pali Hill in Mumbai. Step across swinging wooden doors into a huge courtyard graced by a banyan tree. You take in the brilliant use of white in furniture, knick knacks, candles and flowers. The host smilingly leads you to your table, for which you are spoilt for choice as the rustic space at Olive is divided into an air-conditioned interior and an alfresco section with an open bar. A sweet smell wafts in the air from while lilies adorning the tables. All around you see a heady mix of good looking and smartly dressed people laughing and conversing with cocktail glasses precariously balanced in their hands.

What you get-   The bar menu at olive prides itself with an outstanding wine cellar. The collection of wines boasts of champagne, sparkling wines, red and white wines, Rose and dessert wines from varied origins, but mostly from Australia, India, South Africa, Italy and France.  Apart from wines, enjoy luxury cocktails like Grey Goose Caipiroska, signature cocktails like Sangria Seniora, Appeltini, Moscow mule and classic cocktails, juices, mocktails and more.

The food menu invites guests to relish healthy Italian salads, home-made pastas, thin crust pizzas and delectable desserts along with limited Lebanese dishes. For starters we ordered crostini, toasted slices of baguette topped with fresh tomatoes, feta cheese and chopped basil leaves. Fresh tangy tomatoes balanced the subtle peppery flavor of basil as the crostini disappeared one by one. Our server recommended wine cured goat cheese salad to go with our order for a Sangria pitcher. Made with organic leaves, goat cheese, wine- pickled sliced grapes dressed in balsamic vinaigrette and herbed yoghurt, the salad was a superb choice.

The main course was Ravioli of pumpkin and sage. Traditional Italian pasta, Ravioli is made by stuffing rounds or squares of pasta dough with a filling of one’s choice. Slow roasted pumpkin was mixed with sage, ricotta and parmesan cheese spiced with a hint of nutmeg and served with an earthy brown butter, brandy and walnut sauce. The well balanced flavors were enhanced with freshest ingredients, a pure culinary delight. For dessert were favored the classic Tiramisu over mouth watering desserts like Baked Ricotta pie, wild berry and custard tart, chocolate fondant and more.  Made with mascarpone cheese, coffee liqueur piped over a soaked cookie base and dusted with cocoa powder, it was like tasting heaven in our mouths!

Our Verdict- At Olive, guests can celebrate music and high spirits the entire week. Enjoy the lazy Saturday and Sunday brunch with loved ones over a lavish Mediterranean spread, wine and unhurried service. On Thursdays, bar nights attracts huge crowds, including the Bollywood glitterati. We rubbed shoulders with many a known faces, on a Thursday night. The place is usually crowded on weekends so prior booking is advisable. Valet parking is available. A highly recommended place if you want to soak in the Mediterranean culture in a casual-chic atmosphere.

  1. I agree with you that white furniture is a brilliant idea to use for a cafe. Tables, stools, desks must be comfortable or unbreakable. If your cafe tables are attractive, customers will come automatically, cause they always look for comfortable sitting.
