The Super Seed - Quinoa

Quinoa, as most may think, is not a grain but an edible seed from the quinoa crop. Native to South America, it is known as the “mother grain” by the Bolivians. It is related to amaranth, spinach, and beetroots. Quinoa has been domesticated around 3000 to 4000 ago in Andean regions. It was cultivated by the Incas and was considered sacred by them. A staple food of the South Americans, quinoa which is gluten free and high on protein is becoming popular all over the world now for its various health benefits.

Recreating Magic with Tata Sampann Masale

Recently I got a pleasant surprise. My naanima called to say that she would be visiting us for a few days. I was excited as naanima is affectionate, warm & insists of feeding me with magical dishes as she feels I need nutrients while I am growing up :) There is nothing more satisfying than relishing her lovingly made Sunday lunch over stories of forgotten days.

Naanima made masalas from scratch in her kitchen & served hearty meals round the clock. In her world, rotis were perfectly puffed, dals were bubbling with flavor & Chhole puri was legendary. The whole house waited in anticipation for her Sunday special- Punjabi Chhole & Dal Tadka served with rotis & white fluffy rice, a quintessential Indian thali. She always stressed on eating food full of natural goodness, leading a healthy & balanced life.

During her visit, I wanted to surprise her by making something special & decided to re- create her magic with dishes she loved. Naanima loved simplicity but always gave importance to authentic taste & aroma in her day to day cooking. I wanted the meal I made for her to be homely & wholesome but without any compromise on taste.

After frantically searching the aisles of supermarket & online options, I decided to try Tata Sampann Masalas as an insightful video by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor spoke about how the source of origin of our masalas directly affect the quality & flavor.....interesting, had never thought of such fine nuances!!! The range consists of chili powder, turmeric powder, garam masala for daily cooking & special blends like Dal tadka. Punjabi Chhole (Naanima’s favorite), Paneer Masala & more. That is when I decided the special lunch menu- Punjabi Chhole, Dal Tadka, hot paranthas served with some homemade pickle & lots of curds. It was easy to make the dishes as recipes by none other than Master chef Sanjeev Kapoor were printed on the masala packets :) .

Trekking to Tikona Fort

John Muir once said, "In every walk of nature once receives more than he seeks." We all regularly feel the need to venture in the wild with only nature for company and fresh crisp air blowing on our faces. Trekking is a great option during winters as the best treks are the ones enjoyed during September to March & a few during monsoon season. Along with trekking essentials, one needs sturdy legs, strong lungs & an indomitable spirit to reach the top. One such crisp winter morning we decided to trek to Tikona fort, located approximately 130 kms from Mumbai and only 50 kms from Pune. We started at 5. 30 am from Mumbai ( yes, yours truly did delay everyone by 30 minutes, but no trek is fun without one latecomer) via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to scale the pyramid shaped hill fort, also known as Vitanghad.

Review: With Love From Lebanon- Lebanese Food Festival at Sofitel Mumbai BKC

I have warm memories of gorging on some of the most delicious, succulent, fresh and generous portions of Lebanese delicacies on my only trip to Beirut. The Lebanese hospitality is legendary and the food fresh and bursting with health and flavors. In fact, the Lebanese believe you always have room for seconds and in my case even more :D. A meal at a Lebanese household or at an exotic restaurant in Lebanon is legendary stuff that only can be experienced in person.

The Lebanese food festival at Sofitel Mumbai BKC, aptly called "With Love From Lebanon" invited us on a culinary trip to this exotic land and we were hooked!! We stepped into the Pondicherry Cafe located at the lobby level of Sofitel Mumbai BKC and saw elements that reminded me of my unforgettable trip to the land of abundance.

Eating Right With Probiotic Foods Post Binge Eating

With an increasing awareness about staying fit and healthy, especially after indulging in binge eating during festivals many people in addition to changing their lifestyle (modifying sleeping patterns, exercising etc.) yearn to alter their eating habits. Including Probiotic foods in daily diets can be a big step towards better gut health & undoing the damage caused.

So, what are probiotics in the first place? Well, simply put, probiotics are good bacteria. Yes, there are bad bacteria and then there are good bacteria. Good bacteria helps your body absorb nutrients and calcium better and also increases your immunity levels against allergies.

Although, good bacteria are naturally present in the body, they may not sometimes be sufficient to fight off diseases or the body may lose them during illness and especially when taking antibiotics. Absence of probiotics in the body can lead to digestive problems, cold and flu. It can also lead to skin disorders.

Probiotic foods are those foods that contain such good bacteria. Let’s look at some popular probiotic foods.
