"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" said Leonardo da Vinci. I thought of his quote after dining at Amaya Indian Grill & Kitchen one lazy saturday evening. Now, you must be wondering what has the creator of "The Last Supper" got to do with a restaurant located in Mumbai that serves Indian cuisine? Read on to know more :)

What you see:

Step into Amaya and one sees neat placement of tables for two's and large groups accentuated with interesting decor. The monotony of wooden tables is broken with bright red table mats and the walls are covered with pictures that depict the Indian culture.

The Table-setting at Amaya Indian Grill & Kitchen

We easily relaxed in the simple and comfortable ambience and watched the hustle bustle of servers running around serving hungry guests. Each table had portions of pickle, flavored yogurt and mint chutney served in chai (tea) glass holders...interesting.

What you get:

The menu has a good mix of vegetarian and non vegetarian selection across starters and main course. Ample signature dishes are listed across each course and we started by sampling Bharwan Aloo (Kashmiri marinade stuffed baby potatoes)- nicely char-boiled, Dahi ke kebab (hung yogurt patties)-with a melt-in-the-mouth consistency, Hara Bhara Kebab (pan grilled spinach & vegetable patties) and Hare Mirch aur Dhaniye ki Tikki (fresh coriander & green chili spiced potato patties) with soft centre of cheddar cheese- a must try starter.

In non-veg we tried a couple of dishes too and picked a favorite- Lamb Gilafi Seekh Kebab (minced lamb kebabs) with subtle flavors of kashmiri red chilies, cilantro and bell peppers.

Hunger pangs satiated, we went through the main course menu purely because we could not resist the flavors being served!!! We tried Murgh Makhani (chicken cooked in a creamy tomato gravy), Mutton Rogan Josh (a kashmiri lamb curry), Murgh Karachiwala (chicken cooked with bell peppers and select Indian spices). The meat in each dish was fresh, juicy and flavorsome and we recommend Murgh Karachiwala, on your next visit.

Relish Main-course at Amaya with Ulte Tawe ka Parantha

The vegetarian gravies are equally tasty and we particularly like Subz Miloni- a dish made with mixed seasonal greens. Do try Dal Makhani (slow-cooked black lentils) with Ulte Tawe ka Parantha...just like we did.

The dessert selection is concise and we chose Baked Gulab Jamun with a Rabdi Glaze and Kolkatta Paan Ice-cream...that was not overtly sweet and yummy till the last bite.

Verdict: Amaya Indian Grill & Kitchen pleases you with North Indian fare that carries a hint of experimentation and is high on taste. The taste factor is well balanced between veg and non veg delicacies and that makes Amaya an ideal place to visit with your loved ones or friends. We loved the authentic curries, kebabs and biryani served in simple and elegant interiors. Chef Paul Kinny's signature dishes tempt you to visit Amaya more than once and the value for money prices justify the urge. Like we said, delectable food served in simple interiors are a damn good combination.
