Review: The Square, Novotel’s multi cuisine restaurant in Mumbai

What you see- Lured by the all you can eat promise, we reached, The Square, Novotel Mumbai’s multi-cuisine, all day dining restaurant which serves buffets throughout the day. Walk through stringent security into an impressive lobby dressed with knick knacks and comfortable seating, to Square, located at the ground floor. The 24 hour restaurant is adjacent to the lobby, elevators and reception.  An outdoor terrace facing the pool can be used for al fresco dining. Interactive buffet stations intermingle with a huge spread pepped up with colorful decor items.

What you get- We opted for the lunch buffet and started with anticipation to the soup counter. Two yummy choices, Chicken Flemish soup and veg hot n sour soup set the mood. Next, a huge display of salads- bean sprouts, Hawaiian chicken, green peppers and broccoli and more were placed next to various cold cuts, cheese and breads. Apricots and walnuts for added flavors and choice of dressings and dips made us forget our grueling gym sessions.

After polishing off the salad, we started towards the starter’s counter which had more of Indian starters like chicken tikka, fritters, and seekh kebabs. Vodka guava shot, a shot made with vodka, guava and cranberry juice and crab sticks in sweet lime and chili dressing teased our taste buds.

The main course had two types of Dal- Dal Makhani and Dal tadka, rice preparations in form of veg biryani, chicken fried rice, tomato pulao and steam rice. Guests can order their choice of Indian bread at their tables and enjoy them along with Indian subjis like achari gobi, tawa veg, veg jalfrezi, chicken chettinad and mirch ka salan. Chicken in oyster sauce, herb fish and meat stroganoff made for the continental part of the spread.

We had to wait a while at the live pasta counters with smiling chefs. Take your pick from farfel, penne or spaghetti with tomato cream or pesto sauce. The second live cooking station had choice of grilled vegetables, Paneer, steaks and kebabs. The dessert counter had impressive desserts like apple crumble, mango soufflé, cut fruits, gajar ka halwa, a Baskin Robbins ice cream counter and assorted chocolates, chocolate cakes and marshmallows.  The server prompted us to try their Italian coffee selection to end our very satisfying meal.

Our Verdict- The Square is a good choice for value for money buffet anytime of the day. Alternately, one can also enjoy a la carte dishes.  The dishes tried by us were well made as well as displayed in a nice manner. Bathed in natural light, The Square is a good option for important client meetings or a quick cuppa in the evenings. Home delivery services are not available but guests can enjoy take away facility.
