Review: Jamavar, The Leela Mumbai’s Signature Indian Restaurant.
It was a rainy day but we were adamant. A true foodie braves many a challenges (potholes, errant taxi drivers, forgotten umbrellas) when good food calls…..especially authentic good food. We whizzed past the airport to settle for a royal dining experience at Jamavar, The Leela Mumbai’s signature Indian restaurant. And was the ride worth the trouble? Wicked Spoon Confessions tells you all :)
We stepped into Jamavar, located at the lobby level and were seated at a beautifully set corner table. Crystal chandeliers cast a subdued glow on the gold and brown interiors of Jamavar and the hand carved wooden screens.
Beautiful urlis and silverware added to the ambience. The mood was right for a brief tête-à-tête with Chef Surender Mohan, who passionately explained that the authenticity of the kitchen is maintained by a huge team of chefs who craft dishes from the region they originate- nice :)
What You Get:
The Indian specialty restaurant at Leela serves Indian dishes from the flavorful North and South regions of India. The menu lists some of the finest dishes from these regions and we started the beautiful meal with a cucumber martini- the refreshing taste of cucumber was a welcome addition!
For starters, the chef presented an assorted platter- Cauliflower Bezule- yogurt tossed; deep-fried marinated cauliflower florets, Shahi Gilawat ke Kebab-moist with melt-in-the-mouth texture minced lamb meat kebabs, Tulsi Jhinga- basil flavored juicy prawn cooked in a tandoor and Pahadi Chicken Tikka - boneless chicken marinated with select Indian spices. It was difficult to pick a favorite, but if we must it has to be the Shahi Gilawat ke Kebab :)
The main course- held a big surprise for us! We love meat and eyed the Palak Paneer with a “Hold On We Will Get To U” look but we were surprised. Soft paneer (cottage cheese) bits in creamy spinach gravy laced with a hint of garlic- a perfect accompanist to hot kulcha and tandoori roti.
Relish hot rice with Dal Jamavar- slow simmered black lentils in tomato and cream with the Allepey Fish Curry on the side (a popular South Indian fish curry made with coconut milk and green mango).
Love chicken? Try the Murgh Makhani- classic North Indian gravy or the Kadhai Ghost- marinated lamb chops and cubes in tomato and yogurt gravy.
Just choose your protein and let the Jamavar kitchen take care of the taste :)
Yes, we had dessert too. Jalebi with rabri, with creamy homemade malai kulfi on the side.
Verdict:
If you are looking for authentic Indian food with robust flavors, served in an interesting ambience that is traditional with a contemporary touch, head to Jamavar. Leela’s signature restaurant pleases your taste buds with a menu that lists some of the finest dishes from the North and South regions of India. Take your loved ones or business associates and let the hospitality add to the overall experience- believe us, you are worth it :)
