Review: The Impressive New Pan-Asian Eatery- Auriga in Mumbai

What You See- We noticed the glow radiating from Auriga located in the Famous Studio Lane at Mahalaxmi and knew it was a sign of good times. Smiling ushers flanked the entry and we stepped inside to find an angular bar area with smart use of metal intermingled with stone and dramatic use of lights. We were informed that the lights color-change as the music changes its tempo- Impressive! We reached the dining area, one level up and were curious about a handful of chefs behind an open kitchen which was a separate kitchen tending to Vegans- Nice! Warm wood tones were prominent all around me but the tables were placed a little too close.

What you Get- Comfortably seated, we turned our attention to the cocktail menu with interesting names like trinity star, milky way, super nova & more. We ordered Supernova-an interesting cocktail made with dark rum, coffee and chocolate cookie. We settled for a yet to be named watermelon and jalapeño frozen cocktail made with vodka. Subtle pungent hints of jalapeño balanced by the sweetness of fresh watermelon were a real treat. All the cocktails we tried had a new flavor of experimentation in them.

For food, the sheer variety- Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Singaporean, Malaysian dishes vied for our attention. We started with Japanese seaweed with tofu soup. Flavorsome with silken tofu, it was an instant winner. Next came prawn sui mai dumplings. The dumplings were light with fresh prawns and a distinct flavor of spring onions. Next came the griddle top veg pizza- thin crust perfectly crisp and kept warm with the griddle-stove top made it more enjoyable. This technique is used to serve a few main course dishes as well, so no need to rush your dinner. In between we nibbled on fried Popcorn shrimps and mushroom & bamboo shoot dumplings. I personally liked the Thai corn cakes with the side dip of sweet chili sauce.

For the mains we tried Jasmine steam rice topped with garlic flakes and Cambodian curry. Made with Eggplant, Sweet Potato and Bamboo Shoot the curry was an instant hit. Japanese buckwheat noodles were flavorsome and wet enough to have on its own. The highlight of my visit was the dry ice cocktail. Made with vodka & green tea decoction topped with dry ice it made a visually appealing rolling fog effect attracting lot of envious glances in my direction. ☺

Verdict- Auriga, the two-leveled maiden venture by Kritika Nagpal impresses with the smart play of lights, metal, wood and stone and a menu crafted by Chef Nilesh Limaye. Have a hearty Pan Asian meal before grooving to DJ Shiva's house music. Guests can also relax in its open café during the day. Efforts are taken to add no artificial enhancers like MSG. Auriga, which means a constellation of stars, has something for everyone- foodies, weight-watchers, café aficionados and party lovers. For people in a hurry there are a few signature dishes presented in a “Meal-in-a-Bowl” concept. Exotic Asian flavors are presented in Western style and we look forward to go back to try a few molecular cocktails. Do not miss the exotic blends of green teas, well, I sure did not ☺
